Medication Administration & Validation Course

For unlicensed direct care staff serving clients with developmental disabilities in group homes, adult day programs, foster and family homes, independent and supported living, and any other place that clients receive APD services. This course is designed to train and certify unlicensed staff who work with clients of the Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD) to safely assist clients with their medications.

How do I become a Medication Assistance Provider (MAP) (MedTech)?

 

Steps to becoming a MAP:

1. Take the Basic Medication Administration Training (this course), including passing validation for otic, transdermal, topical by simulation.
2. Take the test, and pass – receive certificate.
3. In an on-site setting with actual clients and their medications, successfully demonstrate your skills with a Validation Trainer – receive certificate.

Annual Requirements:

1. Take the Basic Medication Administration Annual Update, pass, get certificate – on-line, or in Update provided by APD Regional Office

2. Revalidate with a Validation Trainer – receive certificate
To complete this course, you must:

  • Be present the entire time the course is being taught.
    No texting, browsing, reading on electronic devices!
  • Obtain a score of 85% or above on the course content section of the exam.
  • Obtain a score of 100% on the Medication Administration Record (MAR) section of the exam.
  • Take the two-part, Agency-provided exam within 3 calendar days of completing this training.
  • Validate your skills by simulation on the otic (ear), transdermal, and topical routes of medication administration.

PEFA Course

Service Description

  1. It is required that all students enrolled in PEFA training are current MAPs with validation for their Primary route of medication administration, at a minimum.
  2. The PEFA course must be not less than 2 hours in length. This is a statutory requirement. If you find yourself finishing before 2 hours has passed, please use this time to practice the skills learned.
  3. Each student must achieve a score of 85% correct on the written exam to pass. This means they must score at least 17 correct to pass – each question counts as one point.
  4. Students must pass the three competency checklists with 100% competency.

Service Description

This course is prepared to train unlicensed staff who are working through the Agency for Persons with Disabilities to supervise clients who are self-administering medications or to administer medication to clients of APD who have been determined by their Primary Care Practitioner to require this service.

Successful completion will depend upon attendance and obtaining a passing score of 85% or above on the Course Content section of the exam, and 100% on the MAR (Medication Administration Record) section of the exam at the end of class. A certificate will be awarded and will contain at a minimum:

Date(s) of training
Name of Student
Trainer’s printed name and signature,
and nursing license number and expiration date
